"An artist learns by repeated trial and error, by an almost moral instinct, to avoid the merely and the confusingly decorative, to eschew violence where it is a fraudulent substitute for power, to say what he has to say with the most direct and economical means, to be true to his objects, to his materials, to his technique, and hence, by a correlated miracle, to himself." - Irwin Edman

I really enjoyed how the technique turned out in this image, and I may revisit it in the future. The stars or light burst is created on scene using specks of chalk and a lightbulb photographed for roughly two seconds.

This is not a composite, it's an anamorphic illusion! Black paint & yarn.

The black square in the photograph was created with black paint. This is not a digital painting, it is an anamorphic illusion. If the viewer were to take a step to the right or to the left, the perspective would break, and that's the point of this piece. It's all about perspective. Take a moment to look at your problems from a different angle, and you may realize they don't have as strong of a hold on you as you do on them..

Greetings friends and family, and a special hello to all new followers :)

I just signed on and saw that I received my third DD! What an honor! It's really quite exciting to be valued on a community that inspired you to become an artist over ten years ago. Funnily enough, today is also the seventh year anniversary of my first Daily Deviation awarded way back on March 20th, 2009. I can't believe how far I've come, and even though it's been nearly ten years since I first started shooting photography, I feel as though my fine art journey has just begun.

I'll be graduating from a technical photography program this year, a program that forced me to do something I didn't imagine myself ever doing: studio portraiture. However, since I was first forced to shoot studio portraits, I've fallen in love, and it has transformed my work. Now I can't imagine doing anything differently.

Penalty Box by cameraguyy

Last year I took a big step and began selling prints. It's amazed me the amount of support I've received, and this past January I was in my third exhibition already! It's been a thrilling ride and has really lead me to focus on my work and take a look at where it's going. I've been blessed to find a representative with a gallery this year in Detroit, and now I have a new run of prints of my latest work 'Penalty Box' being sold exclusively through that gallery. Check it out! www.galeriecamille.com/prints/…

I believe this image is spearheading a new direction for my work, one that has been transformed by taking a good hard look at my work and my life and figuring out where I stand in regards to my beliefs about the world. It also took realizing that a creative vision is more than a personal style, but rather the soul of the work itself. I'd like to thank all my new followers for joining me on this journey, and I hope that my future work can continue to please and impress you with new ideas and emotions. Daily Deviations are a great way to celebrate the artistic endeavor, and I'm so glad to share this milestone with all of you here.

Best,
John Dykstra
